An Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is the identification used for covered import/export activities under DGFT’s framework. IEC registration is an entity-level process. It is not a product-specific import permission and does not replace customs, tax or sector approvals.
Reviewed 6 October 2026 using official DGFT application guidance. DGFT IEC user manual.
What is IEC registration?#
DGFT issues IEC through its online services. Determine whether your goods or services activity requires it and whether an exemption applies under the current policy. Requirements for service exports are not identical to every goods transaction; confirm the applicable policy and any benefit or specified-technology conditions.
The code is linked to the entity’s PAN. Use the correct constitution, legal name and bank details. A personal and business identification mismatch can prevent verification or create later transaction problems.
Documents and details to prepare#
IEC application preparation
- Entity PAN and accurate constitution/name details.
- Address evidence and supporting authorisation where needed.
- Bank-account details and acceptable account evidence.
- Authorised person’s identity and contact information.
- Current portal signing or verification method available to the applicant.
- Import/export activity and any separate regulatory permissions identified.
Follow the current portal requirements rather than assuming a universal document list for every constitution. Keep the bank, address and applicant details consistent across supporting evidence.
How to register IEC online#
- Start from the official DGFT portal.
- Register or access the appropriate account and select the IEC application service.
- Complete the entity, address, bank and authorised-person details.
- Upload the evidence requested for the application.
- Complete the permitted signing/verification and review declarations.
- Pay the portal-generated fee and retain the reference and receipt.
- Check application status, respond to deficiencies and retain the issued IEC record.
The official IEC manual describes a ₹500 application fee. Confirm the amount displayed for the actual service: new application, modification and annual confirmation should not be treated as the same fee event. Official application manual.
Annual IEC confirmation or update#
The DGFT framework requires IEC details to be updated or confirmed electronically during the prescribed April–June annual period, including when there are no changes. Failure to complete the required update can lead to deactivation under the policy. Do not describe this as a new IEC application every year or assume the original certificate alone establishes current operational status. Official DGFT annual-update notification.
Assign an annual calendar reminder and a reviewer. Confirm the legal name, address, bank information and contacts before declaring “no change”. Save evidence that the annual action was completed.
Common IEC mistakes#
An IEC does not authorise restricted goods automatically. Determine the product’s classification and applicable restrictions before shipping. Separately review customs documentation, product standards, labelling and other approvals for the transaction.
Do not send account credentials or OTPs to an unverified intermediary. Keep the entity’s own contact details current so deficiency notices and status updates reach the authorised people.
Frequently asked questions#
Who issues the IEC code?
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade issues IEC through its official online services.
Is IEC the same as an import licence?
No. IEC identifies the entity for covered trade activity. Restricted or regulated products can require separate permissions and compliance checks.
Do I need to update IEC when nothing has changed?
The annual process includes confirming unchanged details during the prescribed period. Check the current DGFT policy and keep the confirmation evidence.
