ISO Certification in India: Standards, Process and Verification

Understand the essentials. Take your next step with confidence.

ISO certification is an independent assessment against a specified standard. For management systems, the certificate applies to a defined organisation, scope and sites. It is not a universal quality guarantee for every product a business supplies.

Reviewed 6 October 2026. ISO develops standards; it does not perform certification or issue certificates. Certification is carried out by certification bodies. Official ISO certification guidance.

Which ISO standard fits the requirement?#

StandardMain management-system focusSelection question
ISO 9001Quality managementWhich products, services and processes belong in the scope?
ISO 14001Environmental managementWhich activities and environmental aspects are being managed?
ISO 45001Occupational health and safetyWhich workers, sites and hazards are included?
ISO/IEC 27001Information security managementWhich information, systems and risks are covered?

Use the current edition and applicable transition requirements when contracting for an audit. Information-security and environmental standards should not be described as interchangeable “quality certificates”. A tender may specify a particular standard, scope, accreditation and validity requirement.

ISO certification versus BIS product certification#

Management-system certification and product conformity address different questions. A certified quality-management system does not automatically establish that a particular product meets a mandatory Indian product requirement. Check applicable quality-control orders, licensing and product rules separately.

Review workplace safety independently of ISO 45001 certification. Legal compliance remains the organisation’s responsibility.

Certification process#

  1. Define the intended standard, scope and sites.
  2. Assess gaps in the actual management system.
  3. Implement responsibilities, controls and necessary documented information.
  4. Gather operating evidence and conduct internal review and management review.
  5. Select an appropriate certification body and agree the audit scope.
  6. Complete the audit and address findings with evidence.
  7. Maintain the system and the required continuing audit arrangements.

Buying templates is not equivalent to implementing a management system. Procedures should explain how the business works and the evidence should show they operate in practice. Do not promise certification before an independent assessment.

Verify an ISO certificate#

Check the legal entity, standard and edition, scope, locations, certificate number, issue/expiry dates and current status. Verify with the issuing body. Where accredited certification is required, check the certification body’s accreditation and relevant scope with the accreditation body.

For Indian accreditation information, use the NABCB official directory. Accreditation and certification are different roles. Do not assume a logo alone establishes either. ISO conformity assessment explanation.

ISO certification costs#

There is no universal government fee covering every ISO certification. Costs depend on the audit scope, sites, complexity, staff and certification body’s arrangements. Separate implementation support from independent certification and continuing audits. Obtain a written quotation that identifies scope and included stages.

Before selecting a certification provider

  • Correct standard, current edition and required scope.
  • Certification body and relevant accreditation verified.
  • Included sites, audit stages and continuing audits defined.
  • Internal review and operating evidence available.
  • Findings, corrective actions and certificate-status checks planned.

Frequently asked questions#

Does ISO issue the certificate?

No. ISO publishes standards. A certification body independently assesses conformity and issues the relevant certificate.

Is ISO certification compulsory for every company?

There is no universal requirement that every business obtain every ISO certificate. Assess customer, tender, sector and contractual requirements alongside the relevant legal duties.

Does ISO 9001 prove every product is BIS approved?

No. Quality-management certification and product-specific compliance are distinct. Verify the applicable product requirements separately.
